Allcaps Plastik Typeface

Plastik is a new sans serif typeface, moulded and milled from rounded grotesques, geometric letterforms, engraved lettering and the scent of machines still murmuring and spluttering on a Hannover factory floor.

Sascha Bente began the design process with extensive research into characters with rounded terminals, most notably Akzidenz-Grotesk Buch Round. From there, he began analysing and drawing typologies of rounded terminals, aiming to optically adjust each corner and ending to look even more round than a circle. Plastik juxtaposes dynamic details rooted in calligraphy with geometric forms reminiscent of CNC-machined engraving, and celebrates the synergy between imperfect human gestures and co-ordinate based, industrial precision. It finds rhythm by contrasting geometric circular letterforms against narrower grotesque proportions and simultaneously echoes references to Herbert Bayer’s universal alphabet, allowing Plastik to acquire a secondary Modernist-influenced aura.
